NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman midfielder
Michael Harmon (Cape Henlopen H.S./Milton, Del.) of the Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team has been named as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sept. 3, it has been announced by CACC officials.
It is the first time a Goldey-Beacom player has been honored by the CACC since
Juan Perez was named as the CACC Rookie of the Week on Sept. 6 last year.
“I am so proud of how our team played in the season opener, especially Michael, who came through for us in his first college match with the game-winning goal,” Goldey-Beacom Coach
Ryan Dixon said. “I look forward to seeing what else this season brings.”
Making his college debut, Harmon scored the game-winning goal with 10:35 remaining in regulation as the Lightning overcame a 1-0 deficit to earn a 2-1 victory over the College of Saint Rose on Friday evening. Harmon scored the first goal of his college career on a 20-yard shot into the far left corner of the goal.
The win snapped the Lightning's 15-match losing streak, which dated back to the beginning of the 2011 season. It also marked the first road victory for Goldey-Beacom since a 2-1 victory at Caldwell on Oct. 28, 2009.
Now 1-1-0 on the season, the Lightning will host Philadelphia University in the CACC opener for both teams on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 3 p.m. at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.
