CACC Weekly Women's Basketball Report: Dec. 10, 2012
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior guard
Devonne Richardson (Milford Mill Academy/Baltimore, Md.) of Goldey-Beacom College has been named as the recipient of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball Player of the Week award for the week ending Dec. 9, it has been announced by CACC officials.
It is the second time Richardson has been honored with the award this season. She also received the honor after leading the Lightning to a pair of victories at the St. Thomas Aquinas Classic to open the season. It is also the third CACC weekly accolade for Richardson in her career.
In leading the Lightning to a pair of victories over Georgian Court and Caldwell, Richardson averaged a “double double” by scoring 16.5 points per game while grabbing 15.0 rebounds per contest. She also contributed eight assists in the two games, including five against the Cougars on Saturday.
The Lightning's leader in scoring and rebounding, Richardson scored a game-high 18 points with 14 rebounds in the Lightning's 66-60 victory over Georgian Court on Tuesday night. In addition, she made 12 of 22 free throws and had four steals.
On Saturday afternoon, Richardson tallied 15 points with a season-high 16 rebounds as the Lightning edged the Cougars by a 55-53 margin at the Jones Center. In addition, she scored the game-winning field goal with a lay-up with 5.8 seconds remaining as the Lightning overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half.
After scoring a season-high 22 points with 13 rebounds against Wilmington in an 84-53 victory on Monday night, Richardson is the eighth-leading scorer in the CACC by averaging 13.7 points per game. In addition, she ranks fourth in the CACC with a 10.4 rebounding average. She also has five “double double” efforts this year, including four in the last six games.
In addition, Richardson has posted 10 or more rebounds in six consecutive games and needs just 30 rebounds to become the second player in school history to record 1,000 career rebounds. When she reaches that mark, Richardson will become the second player in school history with at least 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in their career.
Led by Richardson, the Lightning will try to extend their win streak to five consecutive games when they travel to Molloy College for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference game against the Lions on Wednesday night.
