PIKE CREEK, Del. – Bill Streets, who served as interim head coach of the Goldey-Beacom College softball team this past Spring, has been named the official head coach, it was announced today by Director of Athletics, Chris Morgan.
“Bill stepped in just after the regular season started and did an outstanding job,” Morgan said. “His softball knowledge and passion for the game are evident. We believe Bill Streets is the right person to lead our softball program.”
Streets was brought on as an assistant by former head coach Jerry Grasso in late September, 2010 and assumed head coaching responsibilities four games into the 2011 season when Grasso stepped down in mid-March.
The Newark, Del. native guided the Lightning to a 14-20 record during his stint as interim head coach, which included the program's first wins since 2006 over perennial Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference powerhouses Caldwell College and Philadelphia University.
With just two seniors on the roster, GBC showed great promise by playing competitively throughout the season, even while losing. Under Streets, seven of the team's losses came by just one run. The Lightning also won five games decided by one run in his reign.
An avid ASA competitive fast pitch softball player from 1968-1987 and 1995-97, Streets also boasts a decorated coaching career at the youth and college level. He coached various ASA Midway Girls' Softball teams (10-and-under, 12-and-under, 14-and-under) and collected six Delaware State Championships (1989, 1990, 1999 with the 10-and-under; 1991, 1992 with the 12-and-under; and 1993 with the 14-and-under) and three league championships from 1988-1990 with the 10-and-under squad. His 1990 10-and-under team also competed in the National Tournament in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
He also had a coaching stint at Wilmington College (now Wilmington University) from 1993-97 and then coached Newark High School from 1998-2009.
“The position of head coach is a privilege and an honor to me,” Streets said. “My coaching staff and I look forward to the challenges ahead and will continue to move this group of players towards our goal of reaching the CACC playoffs in the upcoming season. I believe with the returning players as well as the incoming freshmen, that this goal will be within our reach.”
