Waterloo, Graves and Cavanaugh Earn All-CACC Softball Accolades

Graves3-2011
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Juniors Shannon Graves and Jordan Waterloo of the Goldey-Beacom College softball team earned Second Team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference honors and junior Cailin Cavanaugh earned honorable mention as per balloting of the league's 14 head coaches released by the conference office Tues., May 3.
This marks the fourth consecutive season the GBC softball team has had at least two representatives make either the First or Second team. All three Lightning players this year are first-time honorees.
Graves, a utility player and leadoff batter for the Lightning, was an at-large selection for Second Team honors. The Glassboro, N.J. native was often the catalyst for many Lightning rallies throughout the season.
She was among the league's leaders in four offensive categories: on-base percentage (3rd, .469), batting average (6th, .386), stolen bases (T-7th, 11) and runs scored (T-7th, 30). Graves was also second on the team in hits with 32, T-2nd with five doubles, 5th in RBI (13), and contributed 30 put-outs and eight assists in the field.
A business administration major at GBC with a concentration in marketing management, Graves earned weekly honorable mention on Apr. 4, 2011 for her performance during the week ending Apr. 3. She led the team with eight hits as she batted .727 with four RBI and six runs scored in a 2-2 week for the Lightning. Graves was 4-for-4 and had the winning hits in both come-from-behind victories in GBC's doubleheader against Chestnut Hill on Mar. 29, and then went 4-for-6 with three runs scored in a doubleheader at Concordia on Sun., Apr. 3.
Also, in an extra-inning home game against the University of the Sciences, Graves came in to pinch hit in the bottom of the eighth inning with a scoreless tie. She earned a leadoff bunt single to start the inning, and eventually came around to score the winning run on a single by freshman Roni Peters.
Waterloo1-2011
Waterloo, from Waldorf, Md. and Thomas Stone High School, was voted a Second Team honoree as a first baseman. After starting nearly every game last year at third base, Waterloo handled the transition to first base with ease and earned her first post-season honor from the conference of her career.
She led the team in put-outs with 201 and also had 14 assists to go with just six errors. Her .973 fielding percentage was fourth on the team (first among Lightning infielders) and she was tied for first on the team with four fielding double plays. Among many outstanding defensive plays she made throughout the season was a relay throw to home plate on a ball hit to right field in a tight game against Felician. She first fielded a throw by Graves in right field, then threw to junior catcher Danie Rice who applied the tag for the final out of the inning to end the threat and help GBC go on to win, 3-1.
Offensively, Waterloo was 9th on the team with a .274 batting average. Her 26 hits was fifth on the team and her 20 runs batted in was 2nd. She also was T-8th with eight walks, led the team with five sacrifice fly-outs, and was 2-for-3 on the season in stolen base attempts.
An accounting major at GBC, Waterloo was most impressive in a doubleheader against Lincoln on Mar. 22 at Midway Softball Complex. There, she hit 6-for-7 (including a 4-for-4 performance in the first game) and scored four runs. She was also 3-for-3 with an RBI in a game against Felician on Apr. 21.
Cavanaugh1-2011
Cavanaugh, who started in all but one game this season at center field, earned her first career post-season honorable mention from the conference. A local product out of Newark High School in Newark, Del., Cavanaugh was seventh on the team in batting average at .295, and was tied for the team lead in extra-base hits with 10.
Among her 10 extra-base hits were a team-high six doubles, a conference fourth-best three triples and one homerun. She led the team with 22 RBI, was third in hits (31), fourth in slugging percentage (.438), second in total bases (46) and second in runs scored (26). She was also 3-for-4 in stolen base attempts.
In a doubleheader against Washington Adventist on Apr. 10, Cavanaugh collected four hits (including two doubles and one triple), one walk, four runs scored and six RBI. She earned weekly honorable mention from the conference the next day.
Defensively, Cavanaugh had 38 put-outs and four assists to go with six errors for a .875 fielding percentage.
Cavanaugh is a business administration major at GBC with a concentration in management.
Graves, Waterloo and Cavanaugh helped the Lightning to finish with a record of 17-21 and an 8-18 mark in conference play.
