PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 first half lead and coasted to a 3-0 victory in a pre-season scrimmage against in-state rival Delaware Tech at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field on Thurs. afternoon.

Junior Kwame Appiah opened the scoring in the 27th minute when he poked a shot past the Hawks' goalkeeper on a breakaway.

Del Tech almost tied it right back up two minutes later, but sophomore goalkeeper Ignacio Farias made a great stop while lying on the ground.

Freshman Alex Gonzalez added a goal with just less than 10 minutes left in the first half. Gonzalez dribbled down the far side of the field and took a chip shot from about 20 yards out that sailed over Del Tech's keeper's head and into the right corner of the net.

Neither team could generate much offense in the second half until the 72nd minute when the Lightning struck for their third goal of the afternoon. On a set corner kick play, juniors Rob Cann and Carlos Bastardo orchestrated a give-and-go that resulted in Cann sending a cross perfectly placed in front of the net for senior Mike Sager, who headed it in for the goal.

Lightning goalkeepers Farias and freshman Carlos Meinhard teamed up for the shutout victory. Farias played approximately 70 minutes and Meinhard saw about 20 minutes of game action.

This exhibition match marks the end of the pre-season for GBC. The Lightning are 1-1 in exhibition play, and they open the regular season on Thurs., Sept. 2 when they host Lincoln University at 3 p.m.
