PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 lead but could not hold off the Hornet attack as in-state rival Delaware State came back and forced a 2-2 tie in an exhibition game at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field on Tues. afternoon.
Junior midfielder Ashley Longo scored both Lightning goals at 16:44 and 41:25, respectively, but a Theresa Wappett goal just minutes before intermission brought DSU within a goal at the break. Candace Wire scored a breakaway goal in the 66th minute after a thru-pass by Kelsey Gibson, and that knotted the score at two. Neither team would score the rest of the way.
Longo's first goal came off an assist from junior Felicia Justice. She received a cross from Justice and shot right at Hornet goalkeeper Courteney Haas, who knocked it down but could not come up with it. Longo alertly fired again off of her own rebound and put it in for the game's opening goal.
Junior Marissa Valladares sent a cross into Longo for her second goal of the game in the 42nd minute. The goal marked Longo's second of the game and third of the pre-season.
After that, however, it was all Delaware State, as Wappett responded with a Hornet goal a little over a minute later and gave DSU all the momentum to start the second half. The Hornets outshot GBC 10-1 in the second half (22-8 in the game), and in the 66th minute, Wire scored the equalizer.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Vetrano, who would eventually come out of the game in the 40th minute after a collision in front of the net, made a few terrific saves to preserve the tie. She had three saves for the game and one goal allowed.
Junior Kristin Degenhardt made the start in the Lightning goal. She made eight saves and allowed one goal.
GBC has now finished the pre-season with a record of 1-0-1. Delaware State, a Division I school in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, is already two games into its regular season and is 0-2 for the year with losses to UMBC and the University of Delaware.
