Conn. Freshman Thomas Rees and the Post University Eagles lead after the first round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Golf Championship at Lyman Orchards Golf Club in Middlefield, Conn. The CACC champion will receive the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament.

The Eagles, who are gunning for their fifth straight title, lead Wilmington University by four strokes (310-314). Rees is the individual leader after firing a 74 (+2). Goldey-Beacom College, ranked ninth in the region, stands third with a team score of 321, while Nyack College is fourth with a 332. Holy Family University rounds out the top five with a score of 339.

Helping to lead Post are junior David McGregor and senior Lee Wanklyn, who are tied for second place as a result of each shooting 76. McGregor is the two-time defending individual champion. Also tied for second place is Goldey-Beacom College freshman Devon Ripley, who earned CACC rookie of the week honors for his effort. Marchant deVillier was Post’s fourth golfer (84). Post entered the week as the No. 4-ranked team in the East Region. The Eagles are coming off a team victory at the Dowling College Peter King Memorial Tournament.

Wilmington was led by four newcomers in Paul Tighe, John Perrine, Daniel Ott and Jeff Whiteside, who are all among the top 10 after one round of play. Tighe is tied for fifth (77), Perrine (78) and Ott (79) are seventh and eighth, respectively, while Whiteside is tied for ninth after carding an 80. Senior Matt Hall is tied for 18th with an 83. Wilmington is the No. 1 team according to the latest East Region poll.

Like Ripley, Matthew Quigley broke 80 with a round of 77 for the Lightning to put himself in a tie for fifth place, while Wes Hood shot an 81 to claim 12th place thus far. Ingo Beltran of Nyack led his team with an 80, while Camden Lawrence carded an 82. Also shooting 82 were a pair of Holy Family players in Jonathan Radick and Robert Moratti. 

The second round of the tournament will begin at 7:30 am Tuesday morning. The No. 1 golfers from Post, Wilmington and Goldey-Beacom will be the last golfers to tee off, at 10:03 am.
