CALDWELL, N.J. – Three Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball players and three women’s basketball players earned All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference honors Thurs. night at the conference banquet at the Caldwell College Student Center.
On the men’s side, senior guard Kyle White was named to the All-CACC First Team while junior forward Terrence Parkes made the Second Team and junior guard/forward Sam McDuffie earned honorable mention. The voting was done by the league’s 13 head coaches.
White, a Georgetown, Del. native, finished the season with averages of 21.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game to go with 112 assists and 38 steals. He has already set a school record for points in a season with 562, and ranked third in the league in scoring average. In just two seasons at GBC after transferring from Delaware State, White surpassed the 1,000-point mark in the season finale against Dominican to become the fastest player to reach the milestone in school history.
Parkes, also a transfer from Delaware State, had a terrific season in his first year at Goldey-Beacom. A New Rochelle, N.Y. native, Parkes averaged 15.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per-game despite a nagging ankle problem for much of the season. He had 10 double-doubles this season and scored in double-figures in all but two games.
McDuffie, a Bronx, N.Y. native out of Bordentown High School in N.J., had a spectacular stretch at the end of the season, and finished the season with averages of 13.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per-game. He also dished out 48 assists, blocked 29 shots and had 26 steals. He was also ranked in the top-10 in the league in free-throw shooting and three-point field goal shooting.
Bloomfield’s Gage Daye, the leading scorer in the conference and second-leading scorer in the nation with 26 ppg, was named the CACC player of the year. Rookie of the year accolades went to Leon Porter of Dominican College, and coach of the year honors went to Philadelphia’s Herb Magee. USP earned the team sportsmanship award.
For the women, red-shirt sophomore guard Jacinda Jones was named to the Second Team while freshman forward Devonne Richardson and junior guard Janae Weldon earned honorable mention. The voting was done by the league’s 14 head coaches.
A Claymont, Del. native, Jones finished in the top-five of the league in scoring with 16.0 ppg to go with 4.7 rpg, 39 assists, 22 blocks and 55 steals. She scored a season-high 30 points against Cheyney and recorded a double-double against Bloomsburg with 29 points and 14 rebounds.
Richardson, a Baltimore, Md. native who was a strong candidate for rookie of the year though she did not win the vote, averaged nearly a double-double at 10.7 ppg and 9.9 rpg. She also handed out 58 assists to go with 58 steals. She posted double-doubles in three consecutive games to end the season. Also, she twice made game-winning shots, with one of those coming in an overtime win over the voted on rookie of the year Torey Jones and the Caldwell Cougars.
Weldon, a junior from Trenton, N.J., provided clutch shooting for the Lightning all year long. She was at her best in the overtime win over Caldwell where she shot 9-for-18 from the field (6-for-9 from three-point range) and scored a season-high 26 points to lift GBC to the narrow road victory. She led the team with 60 assists and ranked second in three-point field goals made with 39.
Wilmington senior Amelia Simmons earned player of the year honors while Nyack’s Josh Thompson earned coach of the year and first-year member of the conference, Concordia garnered the team sportsmanship award.
